Lei is nine years old and lives far outside Sacramento Deep, where old roads, patched homes, water tanks, and forgotten infrastructure matter more than corporate systems. She looks completely ordinary: plain clothes, no chrome, no visible ports, and nothing that suggests she belongs anywhere near the strange events beginning to follow her.
Lei has no mission and has chosen no side. She does not understand the larger struggle over water, memory, or power. Her reasons are much simpler. If an animal is thirsty, she wants it to have water. If a neighbor needs help, she helps. Sometimes that is all there is to it.
Yet systems occasionally behave differently around her. Signals cross where they should not, dead infrastructure responds, and sensations appear without purchase, permission, or identifiable source. Lei may not even realize anything unusual happened.
Others may search for hackers, sabotage, or hidden equipment. They rarely think to look at a child. Lei simply goes on living her life, helping when something seems to need it, while the world around her quietly becomes harder to explain.
