The Kurogane Lid
A moss-covered stone lid on Mount Kurogane that seals the forbidden name of a relentless mountain spirit.
Hidden in a cedar clearing on Mount Kurogane, this knee-high assembly of four flat stones was long mistaken for a forgotten roadside shrine. In truth, it was built as a lid over a wooden name-board buried beneath the earth.
The board carried the nine-character name of a mountain entity that could not be driven away. By binding its name beneath stone and renewing the surrounding shimenawa each year, the vanished residents of Ōgi-mura kept the entity confined for generations.
After Aoi Yamashiro accidentally toppled the stones and broke the decaying rope, the seal failed and the entity began following him home. Sonoda Ichirō eventually reconstructed the name on a new hinoki board and drove it into the hollow while the spirit was drawn back into the earth. The four stones were replaced, and a freshly braided shimenawa was wound around them three times and secured with Sonoda’s father’s knot.
The lid remains in the clearing—not as a shrine to something worshipped, but as a weight over something that must never be allowed to walk again.
