The Shrine Maidens

The Shrine Maidens are a recurring presence within the Hollow Echo anthology, most often associated with isolated roadside shrines that appear without warning along otherwise familiar roads.

They are always described the same way—three girls already standing near the shrine when they are noticed, never arriving, never leaving. Their appearance is simple and traditional, but difficult to remember in detail afterward.

One speaks in a calm, polite tone, asking questions that feel slightly out of place. One remains silent, watching without expression. The third laughs softly at the wrong moments, as if reacting to something no one else can hear.

Encounters involving the Shrine Maidens are often followed by disorientation, lost time, or disappearance. Physical evidence is never found, and the surrounding environment shows no sign that anything occurred.

Across multiple Hollow Echo entries, the shrine itself appears to shift in location, suggesting it is not a fixed place, but a recurring point of contact.
