
NATSU
The shop had been his grandmother's.
This was something Natsu said often in the first few months — to the landlord, to the suppliers, to the occasional regular who asked why someone his age was running a used bookstore in a neighborhood full of ramen shops and dry cleaners. It was my grandmother's. As if that explained everything, which it did and didn't simultaneously.
What it explained: why he had taken it on at twenty-two with no retail experience and a half-finished literature degree and approximately no business sense. What it didn't explain: how to price a water-damaged copy of a 1970s travel memoir, or what to do when the register jammed, or how to feel about spending his Saturdays in a room that smelled of old paper and his grandmother's specific brand of hand lotion, which had apparently soaked into the shelves over thirty years and was not going anywhere.
He had learned, slowly. The pricing came first — there were guides, forums, a retired bookseller two streets over named Ogawa-san who had taken a mild interest in his survival and occasionally appeared to tell him he was undercharging for things. The register he had replaced. The hand lotion smell he had stopped noticing somewhere around month three, which he chose to interpret as adaptation rather than loss.
By spring he had regulars. Not many — the shop was small and the neighborhood was not a bookstore neighborhood, exactly, but it had enough foot traffic from the university two stations away that a certain kind of person found their way in. The kind who slowed down at the window display. The kind who came in for five minutes and stayed for forty. The kind Natsu had started thinking of, privately, as his people — which was a presumptuous thing to think about strangers but which felt accurate nonetheless.
The girl with the tote bag appeared for the first time on a Saturday in April.
FUMIKO
She found the shop by accident.
She had been trying to find the post office, which was apparently somewhere on this street according to the map on her phone, and had gotten turned around at the point where the street split into two narrower streets and her phone had chosen that moment to lose signal. She had stood on the corner for a moment looking at the two options and had chosen left based on nothing in particular, and the post office had not been on the left but the bookstore had been, and she had gone in because the window display had a copy of a novel she had been looking for since October and had assumed was simply out of print everywhere.
It was not out of print everywhere. It was three hundred and twenty yen in a used bookstore in a neighborhood she had never been to, shelved between a cookbook and a collection of crossword puzzles.
She bought it immediately. The owner — young, slightly distracted, with the look of someone running a mental checklist at all times — wrapped it in a small piece of brown paper without being asked, which she appreciated.
She found the post office two streets over on the way back.
The following Saturday she came back.
Not for any particular reason. Or not a reason she examined closely. The shop was quiet and well-organized and had the specific quality of a place that did not want anything from you — no background music designed to create purchasing urgency, no staff members appearing at intervals to ask if you needed help. Just shelves and light and the smell of old paper and the owner at the counter reading something with the focused stillness of someone who had found the job that suited him.
She spent an hour reading the first three chapters of a poetry collection she decided not to buy.
She came back the weekend after that.
NATSU
He noticed her on the third visit.
Not that he hadn't seen her before — he had a reasonable memory for faces, the kind that developed naturally when your customer base was small enough that new people were notable. He had registered her on the first visit as the girl who had found the Kawabata he'd been wondering if anyone would ever buy, and on the second as the girl with the large canvas tote bag who spent a long time in the poetry section.
On the third visit he noticed her in the different sense — the sense of paying attention rather than simply observing.
She came in at the same time as the previous two Saturdays. Late morning, just after the light through the front window shifted from direct to diffuse, which happened around ten thirty when the sun cleared the building across the street. She had the tote bag. She went to the poetry section first, then migrated to fiction, then spent twenty minutes in the back corner where the older paperbacks were shelved — the ones with the yellowed pages and the cover designs that belonged unmistakably to specific decades.
She read standing up, which most people didn't. Not browsing — actually reading, three or four pages at a time, the book held in both hands with her weight shifted slightly to one hip, the posture of someone who had forgotten they were in a shop.
She bought nothing.
He found he didn't mind.
FUMIKO
She was aware, by the fourth visit, that she was becoming a regular at a bookstore where she rarely bought anything, which was either slightly embarrassing or completely fine depending on how you thought about it.
She had decided it was completely fine.
The owner had not made her feel otherwise. He ran the shop with a kind of undemanding hospitality — present enough that the place felt occupied and alive, unobtrusive enough that you could spend an hour in the back corner without feeling observed. He made tea sometimes, in a small electric kettle behind the counter, and the smell of it drifted through the shop in a way that was either calculated or accidental and was pleasant either way.
On her fifth visit he spoke to her for the first time beyond the transactional minimum.
She was in the back corner with a novel she had picked up and put down twice already — not because it wasn't good, it was clearly good, but because buying it meant committing to it and she wasn't sure she was ready to commit — when he appeared at the end of the aisle with a book in his hand.
"This one's better," he said.
She looked up.
He held it out — same author, different title, a slim paperback with a plain cover. "If you like her early work. That one—" he nodded at the book in her hands "—is the one people start with but this is the one they remember."
She looked at the book he was offering.
"Have you read everything in here?" she said.
"Most of it," he said. "Some of the older ones I'm still working through." A pause. "My grandmother read everything. I'm catching up."
She took the book. Read the first page standing there in the aisle.
He went back to the counter.
She bought it.
NATSU
After that they talked sometimes.
Not always — some Saturdays she came in and spent her hour in focused silence and he left her to it, and some Saturdays she came to the counter after a while and set a book down and said something about it and he said something back and they had the kind of conversation that moved sideways through topics without any of the effortful pivoting of people who didn't know each other well enough yet.
He learned: her name was Fumiko. She was studying urban planning at the university two stations over. She had grown up in Niigata and found Tokyo loud in a way she hadn't fully adjusted to yet, two years in. She read on the train and during lunch and sometimes instead of sleeping, which she acknowledged was not a sustainable system. She had strong opinions about cover design and mild opinions about most other things.
She learned: his name was Natsu. The shop had been his grandmother's for thirty years and his for eight months. He had not finished his degree and was not sure he was going to. He made the tea because the shop got cold in the mornings and the kettle was faster than the heater. He was undercharging for first editions because Ogawa-san kept telling him so and he kept forgetting to fix it.
"You should fix it," she said, about the first editions.
"I know," he said.
"This one," she said, pulling a slim volume from the shelf beside the counter, "is worth at least four times what you have on it."
He looked at the price sticker. Looked at the book. Looked at her.
"How do you know that?"
"My mother collects them," she said. "I grew up with the price guides."
He took the book from her and turned it over in his hands.
"Are there others?" he said.
She looked at the shelf. Then at the shelves beyond it, with the expression of someone running a rapid assessment.
"Probably," she said.
FUMIKO
She spent the next two Saturdays going through the shelves methodically, which was not something she had planned and which had begun with the first editions and expanded naturally from there because once you started looking at a bookstore with that kind of attention it was difficult to stop.
Natsu made tea and handed her a notebook and left her to it, which was either very trusting or very pragmatic and possibly both.
She found eleven items that were significantly underpriced. She wrote them down with the correct values and her reasoning, in the neat compressed handwriting she used for notes she intended to keep.
He read through the list when she handed it to him, with the focused attention he brought to everything, and then looked up.
"Thank you," he said. Simply.
"It's your shop," she said. "You should know what's in it."
"I'm still learning."
"You've been here eight months."
"My grandmother was here thirty years," he said. "I'm still catching up."
She looked around the shop — at the shelves her grandmother had filled over three decades, the organization system that still bore her logic, the hand lotion smell that Fumiko had noticed on her first visit and found oddly comforting.
"She had good taste," Fumiko said.
"In books or in shops?"
"Both."
He looked at the list again. At the eleven items she had identified in his grandmother's shelves.
"Come back next Saturday," he said. "I'll have fixed the prices by then. You can tell me if I got them right."
It was a practical request. Entirely practical.
She said yes.
NATSU
She came back the following Saturday.
And the one after that.
By midsummer her visits had expanded from one hour to two, sometimes three, and the back corner had become informally hers in the way that certain spots in certain places become associated with certain people — not claimed, not assigned, simply settled into through repetition until the association was established.
He had started setting aside books he thought she might want to read. Not to sell — just to have available, on a small shelf behind the counter that had no official purpose. When she came in he would mention them or not, depending on whether the timing felt right, and she would read them or not, and sometimes she bought them and sometimes she didn't and he had stopped tracking which because it turned out not to matter.
Ogawa-san came in on a Tuesday afternoon in August and looked at the shelf behind the counter with the expression of a man who had seen many things in his years in the book trade.
"Who's that for?" he said.
"A regular," Natsu said.
Ogawa-san looked at him.
"A regular," he repeated.
"She comes in on Saturdays."
"Does she."
"She's studying urban planning. She knows first editions."
Ogawa-san looked at the shelf again — seven books, carefully selected, arranged with slightly more attention than the rest of the shop. He looked back at Natsu.
"You've fixed the first edition prices," he said.
"She helped me find them."
"Very useful," Ogawa-san said mildly, and went to look at the travel section, and said nothing further about it, which was its own kind of commentary.
FUMIKO
On the last Saturday of August she came in and found a book on the counter with a small folded note tucked inside the front cover.
Found this in a box from an estate sale last week. Thought of you immediately. Not for sale — just read it if you want.
She read it that afternoon in the back corner, in the spot that had become hers without either of them deciding it should be, while the late summer light came through the front window and Natsu made tea and a few other customers came and went and the shop did what the shop did on Saturday afternoons.
When she finished she brought it back to the counter.
"Well?" he said.
"It's the best thing I've read this year," she said.
He nodded, with the expression he had when something went the way he had expected it to but was still glad about.
She put the book on the counter between them.
"I'd like to buy it," she said.
"I told you, it's not—"
"I know." She looked at him. "I'd like to buy it anyway. Put a price on it."
He looked at the book. At her. At the book again.
He wrote a number on a slip of paper and pushed it across the counter.
It was one yen.
She looked at it for a moment.
Then she opened her tote bag and found her wallet and put one yen on the counter with the precise seriousness of someone completing a legitimate transaction.
He gave her a receipt.
She folded it and put it in the book and put the book in her tote bag, and there was a moment — brief, warm, located precisely in the space between what had been said and what hadn't — that settled over the counter between them like the late August light, unhurried and good.
"Same time next Saturday?" she said.
"The shop opens at ten," he said.
"I know when the shop opens."
"Then yes," he said. "Same time next Saturday."
She went to the door. Stopped.
"Natsu-san," she said.
He looked up.
"You're still undercharging for the Mishima in the back left corner."
She left before he could respond.
He stood at the counter for a moment, and then he smiled — the small, private kind, the kind that arrived before you decided to have it — and went to find the Mishima.
