The Lantern Thief of Mino Street

Kuroha arrived in Tsukikawa in the late afternoon, and the first thing she noticed about Mino Street was that four grown men were shouting at a lantern.

Not shouting near it. Shouting at it, directly, as if the lantern itself had personal opinions it needed to be talked out of. It hung dark above a fish stall, wick blackened, oil pooled and untouched, while the merchant beneath it held a fresh taper and gestured at his neighbor with the specific fury of a man who had relit the same lamp three times already and intended to make this someone else's problem before he did it a fourth.

"—because your apprentice was through here not an hour ago, and I'm only saying it's the third time this week that my lantern's gone dark and his shop's stayed lit—"

"My apprentice has better things to do than sabotage fish oil, Denbei, and if you'd trim your wick properly instead of buying the cheapest oil in the district—"

"There's nothing wrong with my oil!"

"Then it's the children," said a third man, a cloth merchant by his apron, with the weary tone of someone offering a theory he'd already offered several times and had stopped expecting anyone to believe. "Someone's apprentice, or someone's child, going down the row with a wet rag. It's happened before."

"It hasn't happened before," said the fourth man, older, gray at the temples, standing slightly apart from the argument with his arms folded. "Not like this. Not every night, and not in order."

That last part caught Kuroha's attention more than the shouting had. She had been intending to walk through Mino Street toward the inn recommended to her three towns back — she had heard good things about the noodles — but she stopped instead at the edge of the argument, adjusted her bag on her shoulder, and waited for a natural gap in which to be noticed.

It came sooner than she expected, because the fish merchant, mid-sentence, glanced sideways and saw her hat.

"Witch," he said, in the tone of a man grasping at anything.

"Traveler," Kuroha said. "Passing through. I couldn't help noticing your lantern problem."

"It's not a problem," said the cloth merchant, unconvincingly. "It's an inconvenience."

"In order, you said," Kuroha said to the older man, ignoring this. "The lanterns go out in order?"

He nodded, grateful, apparently, for someone asking the right question instead of assigning blame. "Every night. Starting from this end of the street" — he gestured toward the fish stall — "and moving down. One, then the next, then the next. Never skips. Never goes backward. By the time you notice the first one's dark, you can already guess which one's going next."

"How far does it go?"

"To the end of the street," he said. "Where the old dye shop is. Empty building, been empty three years since old Genzou died and his sons moved to the capital. The lanterns stop going out right around there. As if whatever's doing it goes home for the night."

"Or lives there," Kuroha said.

The four merchants looked at her with four slightly different expressions — the fish seller skeptical, the cloth merchant hopeful, the fourth man thoughtful, and a young man who had said nothing this entire time, evidently an apprentice, looking faintly relieved that someone had said the word out loud.

"It's an empty building," the fish merchant said. "There's nothing in it but old vats and rat droppings."

"Probably," Kuroha said, in the tone she used when she meant almost certainly not, and had learned that saying probably kept people calmer than saying the truth. "I'll take a room at the inn tonight and have a look at your street. No charge for looking."

"And if there's something to actually do about it?" the older man asked, with the directness of someone who had already guessed there might be a charge for that part.

"We can discuss it once I know what it is," Kuroha said, which was the correct answer, and everyone seemed to accept it as such, mostly because none of them had a better one.

She spent the evening walking the length of Mino Street with the unhurried attentiveness of someone doing an inventory rather than sightseeing, which was, in fact, exactly what she was doing.

The street was a good one — narrow but lively, lined with the kind of small tightly-packed shops that shared walls and roof-beams and the general architecture of buildings that had been built by neighbors who trusted each other's carpentry. Lanterns hung at intervals along both sides, strung between eaves, the ordinary evening infrastructure of a market street getting ready for dusk. At the near end: the fish stall, a rice-cake vendor, a tea shop, a bathhouse with steam already rising gently from its chimney vents. Midway: a bakery, its ovens radiating the specific warm bread-smell she had learned to appreciate in Mizukomori. At the far end, past a cluster of smaller stalls: the dye shop, dark-shuttered, its sign faded past legibility, the only building on the street with no lantern hung outside it at all — because, she suspected, no one had bothered relighting one there in three years.

She talked to shopkeepers as she went, in the manner that made people believe they were simply having a pleasant conversation with a passing traveler rather than being interviewed.

The bathhouse keeper, a broad woman with forearms like a blacksmith's, complained that she'd had to relight the boiler fire four times last night, and each time it caught fine and then simply — stopped, as if someone had reached in and pulled the heat straight out of the coals. "Not smothered," she said, frowning at the memory. "Smothered leaves smoke and half-burnt wood. This just — cooled. Coals sitting there, still black, but cold as if they'd never been lit at all."

The tea seller reported that a fresh pot, made not five minutes prior, had gone stone cold in her hands while she was walking it three steps to a customer's table. "I've made tea in this shop for eleven years," she said. "I know what a pot feels like when it's cooling normal, and this wasn't normal. It was like something drank the heat out of it between my hands and the table."

The baker — a thin, harried man named Josuke, with flour to his elbows and the specific exhaustion of someone who had not slept well in a week — had the most alarming story of all. Three nights ago his oven had gone cold mid-bake, the fire seemingly smothered though the wood inside hadn't burned down, and he'd opened the door to investigate, and the moment he leaned in, the whole thing had roared back to life at once — flame leaping out with enough force to singe his eyebrows and the front of his hair, which, Kuroha noted, had grown back at an uneven and faintly comic angle.

"Like it was hiding something in there," Josuke said, "and got startled when I looked."

"Or it had been storing heat and lost its grip on it all at once," Kuroha said, mostly to herself.

Josuke stared at her. "You think something's doing this on purpose?"

"I think something's doing this because it's hungry," Kuroha said. "Which is a different thing from doing it on purpose, in the way that matters for whether it can be reasoned with. It probably can't. But it can be dealt with."

One shopkeeper — a woman who sold dried goods two doors from the dye shop — mentioned, almost as an afterthought, that she'd found frost on the inside wall of her storage room the week before. "Middle of a warm week," she said. "I thought I was imagining it. By morning it was gone, like it'd never been there. I didn't tell anyone. Didn't want people thinking I'd lost my sense."

"You hadn't," Kuroha said, and the woman looked pathetically grateful to hear it.

By the time she'd finished her circuit, she had a fairly complete picture, and it was not the picture of darkness spreading down a street. It was the picture of something moving through a street at night, taking heat wherever it found a concentrated, accessible source — a lantern flame, an oven fire, a pot of tea, the residual warmth soaked into stone — and doing it with enough precision that it left almost no other trace behind. No damage to the buildings. No injuries, apart from Josuke's eyebrows. No supernatural cold clinging to any one place for longer than a night.

It was hungry, methodical, and — this was the part that interested her most — it appeared to prefer following a connected line of warmth rather than jumping between isolated sources. Lantern to lantern, in sequence, down the row. That wasn't random foraging. That was something reading a path.

She bought a bowl of noodles from a stall that, she was pleased to note, had not yet lost any heat to anything, and ate them while watching the dye shop from a respectful distance as the light went gold and then grey and then dark.

The lanterns began going out at the fish stall end, exactly as promised, exactly as everyone had described, and Kuroha watched with the specific satisfaction of someone confirming a hypothesis rather than discovering a mystery.

One light died. A pause — perhaps thirty seconds, perhaps a minute, difficult to judge precisely — and then the next one, four shopfronts down, guttered and went dark in the same unhurried, undramatic way, as if someone had simply decided it was time and turned a key somewhere.

She had positioned herself roughly in the middle of the street, near the bakery, with a small paper charm folded into her palm — a warmth charm, simple work, the kind she used on cold nights when a fire wasn't practical, meant to hold a modest, steady heat for several hours once activated. She'd primed it earlier and set it beside the nearest lantern, a small unassuming test: if something was following a path of warmth down this street, a fresh heat source directly in its way ought to draw its attention.

It worked exactly as she'd hoped, which was its own kind of warning, in retrospect, because things that worked exactly as hoped on the first try often did so because the thing on the other end had noticed the trap and decided to demonstrate that it had noticed.

The charm-paper, sitting warm and steady in the dark, suddenly curled at the edges — fast, the way paper curled near an open flame, except there was no flame, only the sensation, when she crouched to look, of something having been there and taken exactly what it wanted in a fraction of a second. The paper crumbled to cold ash between her fingers. The charm's warmth was simply gone, extracted so cleanly it was almost elegant.

And above her, along the roofline, something moved.

She only caught it for a second — a long, low shape crossing between two roof-peaks, quick, close to the tiles, throwing off no more silhouette than a large cat might have, except cats did not, in her experience, leave a faint shimmer of heat-haze in the air behind them the way distant summer roads did at noon.

By the time she straightened up and looked properly, it was gone.

"Efficient," she said, to the empty street, and meant it as a compliment, mostly.

The dye shop, when she let herself in through a side door whose lock gave up after token resistance, smelled of old dust and older dye — a flat mineral smell layered over something faintly bitter, indigo gone stale in vats no one had emptied in three years. It was exactly the kind of neglected building she'd expected: shelves half-collapsed, broken crockery, a floor gritty with dried pigment that crunched underfoot.

It did not feel haunted. She noted this specifically, because she had walked into enough genuinely haunted buildings to know the difference — the particular pressure certain places carried, grief or rage worn into the walls like a smell that never faded. This place felt only empty. Ordinary abandonment. Whatever lived here now was a tenant, not a resident in the way a ghost was a resident, and that distinction mattered for how she planned to deal with it.

She found the signs quickly enough, once she started looking properly, up where the light from her small lamp reached the rafters. Soot streaked across beams that had no reason to have soot on them, since nothing in this building had burned in years. Cold patches in the air near the roofline, distinct enough that she felt them on her upturned face like a draft from an open window, except the shutters were closed and there was no wind. A scattering of chewed lamp wicks on a high shelf, gathered with a peculiar deliberateness, as if collected rather than simply dropped. And, tucked into the angle where two roof-beams met, a crude nest of warm stones — smooth river stones, by the look of them, stacked and arranged with more care than she would have expected from an animal, radiating a low steady heat that had no visible source.

"There you are," she said, quietly, to the empty rafters, and meant it the way a hunter meant it upon finding a den — not affection, but a kind of professional respect.

She set her lure with the same care she'd give any working: a single stone, heated properly this time, not with a paper charm but with actual banked coal-warmth carried carefully from the bathhouse in a covered clay pot, set in the middle of the shop floor, ringed with a thin loop of warded thread designed to hold anything that crossed it in place for the several seconds she'd need to act.

It was, she thought, watching it from the shadows of a collapsed shelf, a reasonably good trap.

It did not work.

She heard it before she saw it — a faint scraping overhead, along the rafters, moving with the light quickness of something that weighed very little and trusted its own balance completely. She held still, watching the stone, watching the thread, waiting for the moment it would drop down to investigate the heat sitting so conveniently in the open.

Instead it circled — she felt this more than saw it, a slow methodical passage along the beams above her, taking its time, clearly aware of both the stone and the fact that a stone left so neatly wasn't the sort of thing that occurred naturally — and then, with a speed that caught her flat-footed, it dropped not onto the lure but onto the warded thread itself, several feet from where she expected any contact at all, and simply drained it.

She felt the ward fail the way she'd feel a held breath let go — a small snap of released pressure, gone before she could respond to it — and in the same instant something brushed past her shoulder in the dark, fast and warm, and knocked her sideways into an old shelving rack that had been rotting quietly for three years and chose that exact moment to finish the job, collapsing under her with a crash of splintering wood and an explosion of ancient dried dye-powder that coated her, instantly and thoroughly, in a fine blue-black cloud.

By the time she'd extracted herself, coughing, dye dust settling in her hair and the creases of her sleeves, the lure stone was gone — not stolen exactly, more shoved off its mark and left cooling three feet away, its heat mostly spent — and a section of the upper window, its paper screen long since rotted through, showed a fresh tear where something had gone out through it in a hurry.

Kuroha sat in the wreckage of the shelf for a moment, covered in indigo dust, and allowed herself a single, unhurried exhale.

"Well," she said. "You're paying attention."

She had, she reflected, made the mistake of assuming the creature would behave like a simple hungry animal drawn to the nearest available food. It was not simple. It had recognized the thread as a trap component before touching the stone, had targeted the ward specifically rather than the bait, and had done all this while she was watching for it, which meant it either had very good instincts for constructed magic or had encountered something like this before and survived it. Either way, the failure was, as failures went, a mercifully small one — she was bruised, dusty, and mildly embarrassed, and the creature had left through the window rather than through her, which she counted as an acceptable outcome for a first attempt she now recognized as too straightforward by half.

She got up, brushed off as much dye as she reasonably could, and went to the window it had used, because there was nothing left to do in the dye shop and the night was not yet finished with her.

The rooftop pursuit that followed was, by Kuroha's later private accounting, one of the more undignified evenings of her professional life, though not one of the more dangerous ones.

She went out through the same broken window — narrower than she'd have liked, but she'd fit through worse — and onto the sloped tile roof of the dye shop, where the night air was considerably colder than the street below and the tiles considerably less stable than she'd hoped. She caught sight of the creature almost immediately: a low dark shape crossing the ridge of the next roof over, moving with the fluid, low-slung quickness of something built for exactly this kind of travel.

It was, in decent moonlight, an odd little thing — long-bodied, low to the ground even when it wasn't crouched, charcoal-dark all over in a way that made it hard to separate from roof-shadow except for the faint ember-glow visible beneath its skin, banked and dim now but clearly capable of brightening, the visible evidence of however much heat it currently had stored inside itself. It moved like something between a stoat and a lizard and something that had no honest business existing as either, and it moved fast.

She followed.

Across the dye shop's roof, down a beam that connected to the dried-goods shop next door, along a row of hanging signs that swayed dangerously under her weight and considerably less dangerously under the creature's, which barely seemed to touch them at all. She lost her footing once on a patch of roof tile slicked with night-damp and caught herself on a chimney vent that was, thankfully, not the bathhouse's currently active one. She gained ground on a stretch of flat awning canvas stretched between two shopfronts, which held her weight with an alarming amount of give, and lost it again when the creature doubled back over her head along a beam she hadn't accounted for, forcing her to duck flat against warm tile that she registered, distantly, belonged to the bakery — Josuke's oven venting heat straight up through the roof above it, and the creature, she noted, slowing very slightly as it crossed that particular patch, drawn to it the way anyone might slow near good cooking smells.

That was the moment she understood something useful, crouched flat on warm tile with dye dust still in her hair, watching the creature hesitate over the bakery roof rather than the cooler tiles beside it.

It was cornered, twice, in the chase that followed — once against a chimney stack with nowhere obvious to run, where it responded by releasing a sudden burst of stored heat that flared bright orange beneath its skin and forced Kuroha to throw herself sideways off a section of roof that abruptly became too hot to touch, landing hard on the awning below and losing several seconds recovering her breath; and once along a narrow connecting beam between two buildings, where it feinted toward her and then simply dropped through a gap barely wide enough for its body, leaving her flat against the beam with her hands still raised defensively against an attack that never came.

But by the second cornering, she had stopped trying to catch it, and started instead simply watching where it went and how.

It did not, she noticed, make straight for the nearest patch of warmth every time. Twice it passed close to small residual heat — a chimney gone mostly cold, a stone wall that had held afternoon sun and was slowly losing it — and ignored both, continuing instead toward warmth it could trace back along a connected path: heated tile leading to an active oven vent, a metal roof-gutter still faintly warm from where it ran near the bathhouse boiler. It wanted a source it could follow to something larger, not a scrap sitting alone with nothing behind it.

She sat on a rooftop two streets over, breathing hard, dye dust and tile-grit ground into her palms, and watched the creature vanish over a ridge in the direction of the dye shop, apparently satisfied for the night, and allowed herself to feel, for the first time since the shelf had collapsed under her, something like genuine amusement.

"Ah," she said, to no one. "You follow the path. You don't hunt for scraps. You want a river, not a puddle."

That, she thought, climbing carefully back down to street level with her knees protesting the entire descent, was something she could use.

She spent the next day building a river.

It took most of the morning and the better part of her afternoon, and it required, over Josuke's initial and quite reasonable objections, borrowing heated stones from his oven, several lengths of copper wire from the tinsmith warmed over a low flame until they held heat like a held breath, three panes of old lantern glass still faintly warm from the previous evening's use, a stack of the small charm-papers she used for minor warming work, primed and left to hold a slow residual heat rather than a sudden one, and — the piece that took the most convincing — permission from the bathhouse keeper to run a length of her metal roof-guttering, warmed by the boiler beneath it, along a path Kuroha specified with the careful precision of someone laying out a much larger and much less visible trap than anyone watching would have guessed.

"You want to run warm metal along my roof," the bathhouse keeper said, arms folded, "to lure a demon."

"To lure a small hungry creature," Kuroha corrected. "Demon is doing a great deal of work that isn't earned. And yes."

"And this ends with my roof not catching fire."

"It ends with your roof not catching fire," Kuroha agreed, which was true, and the bathhouse keeper, after a long assessing look of the kind Kuroha had grown used to receiving from practical women running practical businesses, allowed it.

By evening, Mino Street had, invisible to anyone who wasn't looking for it, a continuous unbroken thread of warmth running from the bakery's chimney vent, along guttering and beam and hung wire, past the bathhouse roof, along a final stretch of warmed lantern-glass set at intervals like stepping stones, all of it converging at the dye shop and terminating — this was the part Kuroha was proudest of — directly inside one of the old dye vats.

She had spent an hour on the vat itself. Cooling powder lined its interior, packed carefully into the seams. Scraps of polished metal, scavenged from the tinsmith's floor sweepings and buffed clean enough to hold a reflection, were arranged along the inner walls at angles she'd calculated with more care than she usually admitted to putting into this kind of thing. The vat's mouth, when the creature finally reached it, would look — she hoped, she was fairly confident, but hoped nonetheless — like the largest, richest, most continuous source of warmth on the entire street, a river's mouth rather than a trickle.

The trick, and it was a small one, was that a closed loop of reflective surfaces holding cooling powder didn't offer warmth so much as return whatever warmth was put into it, over and over, slightly diminished each time. Something trying to feed on a source like that would find itself, very quickly, feeding on its own reflected heat — spending more than it gained, in a loop with no way out except to stop.

She lit her false river at dusk, in sequence, from the bakery end, and settled into the shadow of a shuttered stall to watch, dye still faintly staining the creases of her hands despite two thorough washings.

It took the bait exactly as she'd hoped, though watching it happen still produced a small satisfied jolt she didn't bother suppressing. It came down off the roofs at the bakery end, drawn — she could see the faint ember-glow beneath its skin brighten as it fed briefly on the chimney's residual heat — and rather than scattering to find its own path, it followed. Beam to gutter to wire to lantern-glass, exactly the connected, continuous line she'd built, moving with the same fluid quickness she'd chased across three rooftops the night before, until it reached the dye shop, and the vat, and — pausing only a moment at the mouth, testing, she assumed, whether this represented a source worth the risk — dropped inside.

The glow beneath its skin flared instantly, bright and greedy, the way it must have looked every time it fed properly, drawing in what it clearly believed was a rich continuous warmth.

And then, just as clearly, it found only itself.

The reflected heat came back at it from every angle, diminished but present, and it tried again, harder, the glow flaring brighter — and came back smaller. Kuroha watched from the doorway, arms folded, as the creature fed on its own returning warmth in a tightening loop, growing frantic in a way that had nothing violent in it and everything of simple frustrated hunger, until the ember-glow beneath its skin guttered down to almost nothing and it curled, finally, into a small exhausted heap at the bottom of the vat, breathing — if that was the word — in slow shallow pulses, spent rather than harmed.

Kuroha approached slowly, and it did not run, which told her everything she needed to know about how thoroughly it had worn itself out.

Up close, in the lamplight, it was almost endearing — small enough now, curled up, to fit in two cupped hands, its charcoal hide dull and cooling, two very small eyes opening to regard her with an expression she recognized from a great many tired, hungry things she'd encountered over the years: wary, resigned, and entirely without malice.

“You’re not malicious,” she said. “That does not make you harmless.”

She lifted it carefully from the vat, keeping one hand clear of its head. It was still warm, but no longer hot enough to burn.

“You need somewhere else to feed.”

She left it, two days later, at an old brickworks she'd passed on her way into Tsukikawa — abandoned for decades, its kilns long cold to human hands but still, she suspected correctly, holding banked warmth deep in the fired brick, the kind of slow enormous heat-memory that would feed something small for a very long time without anyone minding. It uncurled from her arms, tested the nearest kiln with what she could only describe as cautious optimism, and vanished into the brickwork with considerably more enthusiasm than it had shown for anything since the vat.

She did not look back at it for long. Some farewells didn't require ceremony.

Mino Street, in the meantime, had spent those two days in vigorous dispute over exactly whose fault the entire business had been, who owed whom for damaged roof tiles, whether the bathhouse keeper's guttering counted as a "repair" or a "renovation" for purposes of who paid for it, and — with rather more energy than the previous questions combined — how much, precisely, the traveling witch was owed for solving a problem that four merchants had spent a week blaming on lamp oil, apprentices, rival shopkeepers, and children.

Kuroha left before they reached a conclusion on any of these points, which she suspected they never fully would, not because the town was uncommonly quarrelsome but because towns in general enjoyed a good argument roughly as much as they enjoyed the problem being solved, and she saw no reason to deprive them of it.

Josuke pressed a warm loaf into her hands on her way out, along with a small paper packet of dried fish from the fish merchant, who had apparently decided, somewhere in the last two days, that she'd been right about his oil after all and this represented an acceptable form of apology.

"Eyebrows growing back evenly yet?" she asked him.

Josuke touched them self-consciously. "Slowly," he said. "My wife says it gives me character."

"Your wife is a generous woman," Kuroha said, and left him laughing at the doorway of his shop, warm bread-smell rising properly behind him for the first time in over a week.

Dawn, when it came, found Mino Street doing exactly what a market street was supposed to do. Lanterns burned steady through the last of the night without dying in sequence toward anything. Steam rose thick and honest from the bathhouse chimney. The bakery's ovens held their heat all the way through a proper bake, and Josuke's bread came out, by all accounts, better than it had in a week, unburnt eyebrows notwithstanding. The merchants, freed of their nightly crisis, resumed arguing instead about the price of fish, the quality of dye, and whose apprentice had left a cart improperly parked across the tea seller's doorway — ordinary arguments, the kind a healthy street produced as a matter of course, entirely unhaunted by anything larger than itself.

Kuroha crossed the bridge out of Tsukikawa with a warm loaf in her bag and dried fish in her pocket and a faint permanent smudge of indigo dye still visible, if you looked closely, in the creases of her left hand.

She looked closely, once, on the road, and decided it would probably wash out eventually.

Probably.
