The Cold-Tech Dampener is a compact industrial device built to force cold into places it does not belong. Its casing is heavy, its vents iced over, and its core glows with the same blue light spreading through the walls, pipes, and service corridors around it.
In The Burnline, Akane Hoshino faces a district being frozen shut by cold-tech dampeners hidden inside the city’s infrastructure. The device does not look mystical. It looks manufactured, wired, installed, and deliberate — proof that someone turned the district itself into a containment system. Frost gathers where there should only be concrete. Pipes lock under ice. Rooms become too cold to remain safe. The city is not haunted; it is being controlled.
The Dampener is dangerous because of its quiet purpose. It does not explode, chase, or announce itself. It simply lowers the world around it degree by degree, cutting people off until the district can no longer function. By the time the cold becomes visible, the trap is already working.
