In Starbound Drifters, Mara Voss’s plasma riveter is a shipbreaker’s tool that becomes essential during Bunny’s rescue.

Mara Voss’s plasma riveter is one of the most practical pieces of equipment aboard the Overdraft: a heavy industrial tool built for shipbreaking, hull repair, and forcing open machinery that has stopped cooperating. It is not elegant, new, or designed to impress anyone. Its charge is limited, its fittings are scarred from hard use, and Mara knows exactly what every discharge will cost them later.
The plasma riveter first appears in Chapter 4, “Unknown Sender,” when Jax and Mara enter an abandoned freight-transfer station to rescue Bunny from armed search teams. Faced with a sealed pressure door, Mara uses a full charge to burn through the hinge assembly and force the way open. That decision gets them closer to Bunny, but it also leaves the tool with almost no reserve for the escape.
As the rescue turns into a running fight through the station’s maintenance levels, the riveter becomes a measure of their shrinking options. Mara uses its remaining charge to tear open an access panel, allowing the group to reach the lower level and escape their pursuers. By the end, the tool is dry, heavy, and nearly useless as anything but a blunt object.
The riveter reflects Mara’s place in Galactic Salvage Crew 99. She is the crew member who knows how long a repair will hold, what a damaged system can survive, and which ugly solution will keep everyone alive for one more hour. In Starbound Drifters, it is a working tool—but it also represents the crew’s entire way of living: patched, improvised, and always one bad decision away from running out of power.
