Hana's Poetry Book

The poetry book is the first meaningful artifact in All the Lives I Loved You. On a rainy afternoon, Hana Mori enters the small bookstore where Ren Akiyama works and asks for help finding more work by a poet whose name she only half remembers. To Hana, it is an ordinary question about an ordinary book. To Ren, who has awakened at twenty-one with fourteen years of marriage to her still in his memory, it is the moment he has spent days waiting to see again.

The book becomes the quiet starting point of their relationship. It gives Ren an excuse to walk Hana to the right shelf, begin a conversation, and recognize the familiar details he fears he has lost forever. She returns a few days later to say she liked the collection, opening the door to their first coffee together.

As Ren’s life resets and he tries again to find Hana, the poetry book represents something he cannot fully control: the beginning may look familiar, but the person standing across the counter is never simply a scene from his memory. Each version of Hana brings her own choices, interests, timing, and future.

Unlike Ren’s notebook, which records his attempts to make love predictable, the poetry book represents discovery. It is a reminder that their story only has a chance to continue when Ren stops trying to repeat every remembered line and allows Hana to become someone he can meet again.
